Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born on March 21 th in 1923 in Chindwara, India. She was born realized and knew already in early childhood that the special abilities she has should be passed on to humanity. As a young girl she was part of the Mahatma Gandhi freedom movement in which she played an important role as she was counselling Gandhi in spiritual affairs.

Later she took up Medicine study at the Christian College at Lahore. The loving mother and grandmother is married to Sir C.P. Shrivastava, a former General Secretary of the United Nations Maritime Organisation. Since 1970 Shri Mataji is working continuously on spreading her special knowledge and abilities as “Sahaja Yoga”. Many thousands of people in more than 100 nations have made use of her great knowledge for the betterment of their lives. Many organisations and governments recognized and awarded her for her great work and achievements.


Nobel Prize Nominee

Shri Mataji has been widely acclaimed around the world for her selfless efforts towards social improvement and world peace. She has initiated a number of organizations for community service, including The International Hospital and Cancer Research Center in Mumbai (Bombay) India, a charity house for poor people in Delhi, a drug rehabilitation center in Italy and other facilities.

She has received many commendations:

1998: Recipient of the Unity Award for International Understanding by Unity International Foundations.

1995: Shri Mataji has been an honoured speaker at many high level forums such as the United Nations, where she spoke on ways of achieving peace, including the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing, which was attended by a prominent women from around the world.

1993: Appointed as Honourary Member of the Presidium of the Petrovska Academy of Art and Science. In the history of the Academy, only twelve people have ever been granted this honour, Einstein being one of them.

1993: The Ayatollah Medi Rouhani of Iran, a prominent proponent of religious moderation and one of the four Ayatollah who lead the shi’ite Muslim faith, called for a convocation of a World Congress of religious leaders aiming at the creation of a charter for peace based on Shri Mataji’s teachings.

1986: Declared Personality of the Year by the Italian Government.

1989: The 1989 United Nations Peace Medal.
